His biographer,² however, seems to contradict him. He says that students in Nālandā study the Great Vehicle and also (the works belonging to) the eighteen sects, and not only these, but even ordinary works, such as the *Vēdas* and other books, the *Hetuvidyā*, *Śabdavidyā*, the *Cikitsāvidyā*, the works on Magic (*Atharvavēda*), the *Sāṃkhya*; besides these they thoroughly investigate the "miscellaneous" works. That these subjects were taught at Nālandā is beyond doubt, because Hiuen Tsiang himself studied the *Yogaśāstra*, the *Nyāya-Anu-* sāra-śāstra, Hetuvidyā-śāstra, the Śabdavidya and works on Mahāyāna such as the Koṣa, Vibhāṣā, etc., at Nālandā from Śīlabhadra and others.¹
