3. “The significance of the middle term (called *Hetu*) for inference and hence for the theory of reasoning, is for the first time discussed by Diṅnāga and the result of his study is the famous doctrine of the “Three Phases of *Hetu*” त्रैरूप्य or the three essentials of a good *Hetu*, which are enumerated in our text as पक्षधर्मत्वम्, सपक्षसत्त्वम्, and विपक्षे चासत्त्वम्”²
