We would, however, like to draw the attention of Dhruva to the fact that even the contemporaries and successors of Dharmakīrti regarded Dharmakīrti as the author of the *Trairūpa* theory.¹ This point will be made explicit from the fact that Pātrakesari severely criticised the *Trairūpa* theory, and he in turn was replied to by Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla, two eminent pandits of Nālandā. This action on Śāntarakṣita's part is very significant. Why should he take up the challenge unless the challenge was directed against a school which he represented? This school, we think, was no other than that of Diṅnāga and Dharmakīrti.
