Like Nālandā, it grew up under the royal patronage. Dharmapāla furnished it with four establishments, each consisting of 27 monks, belonging to the four principal sects. He also endowed it with rich grants, fixing regular allowances for the maintenance of priests and students. Provision was also made for temporary students.² Other Pāla Kings, besides Dharmapāla, must have endowed the University with various gifts. Nayapāla, we know for certain, showed a keen interest in the administration of the University, for Dīpaṃkara Śrījñāna or Atīśa accepted the post of High Priest at Vikramaśilā during his reign.³
