The term *tiryaṅmāni* literally means 'transverse' or 'oblique' measure. In the *śulbasūtra*, however, it has been used to signify the 'breadth' or 'shorter side' of a rectangle. Mahīdhara says: *nirañchanenākarṣaṇe kṛte śroṇyaṃsa parichedikā yā rajjuḥ sā tiryaṅmāni.*
