The translations of *Gītā* by Charles Wilkins and *Abhijñānaśākuntala* by Sir William Jones strengthened the spirit of renaissance and awareness of world civilizations. *Gītā* was the first work directly translated from Sanskrit into English by Wilkins, followed by William Jones' translation of *Manusmṛti* under the title *Law Book of Manu* published in 1794 and *Hitopadeśa*, again by Wilkins (1795).
