The Mīmāṁsā system had its beginnings in theoretical/interpretative discussions and speculations. Mīmāṁsā has also been termed as Vicāraśāstra (the discourse in thinking) in the chapter on Mīmāṁsā in *Sarvadarśanasaṁgraha*. The process of analysing was also termed as *mīmāṁsā*. *Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa* III.5.7 says : *mīmāṁsante brahmavādinaḥ* (the philosophers speculate). The means of arriving at truth is Mīmāṁsā. The Upaniṣads therefore describe the philosophers conducting the Mīmāṁsā with regard to the questions about what is self, what is *Brahman*?⁸³
