*Mahānirvāṇatantra*, a text marking the beginnings of modern Indian philosophy, was created at the end of this phase between 1775–1875, by unknown author/authors, most probably in Bengal. It is different from *Nirvāṇatantra* and could be a revised version of a Buddhist text recast in Vedāntic garb.¹⁹⁸ Sures Chandra Banerji suggests that the entire text is a fabrication by Hariharānandanātha, preceptor of Raja Rammohun Roy (1772–1833), as it reflects the reformist views and the first edition of the text was brought out by Ādi Brahma Samāj, which was founded by Roy.¹⁹⁹
