THE profundity of the debates in the areas of philosophy, *dharma* (ethics and law) and Āyurveda, etc. led to the theoretical discussion on *vāda*, and a conceptual universe of Vādaśāstra was thus created. A theoretical framework on the art of debates had been evolved in the Vedic period. Besides documenting some of the most profound debates in their times, the Vedic texts also present a few technical terms and key concepts related to this discipline. The terms like *yukti*, *tarka*, *smṛti*, *pratyakṣa*, and *aitihya* are used in the Brāhmaṇas, Āraṇyakas and Upaniṣads.¹
