Regarding the aggregates (*skandhas*), bases (*āyatanas*) and elements, the Vaibhāṣikas believe that the word *skandha* means *rāśi*. It is an aggregate of the following:
• Past, present and future,
• the external and the internal,
• the gross or the subtle depending upon its status as resistant (*sapragraha*) or non-resistant (*apratigraha*),
• the inferior or the superior, and also depending upon whether it is sullied (*kliṣṭa*) or unsullied (*akliṣṭa*) with vices (*kleśas*), and
• the far or the near — depending upon whether it is past, present or future.
