This legendary account refers to some actual facts in the history of Hindu medicine. Two of the six renderings of Punarvasu Ātreya’s teaching given by his six pupils are actually extant: the compilation of Bhela (“Bhelasaṃhitā”) and Agniveśa’s encyclopedic treatise which finally took the shape of Caraka’s compilation (“Carakasaṃhitā”).
