The Bhelasaṃhitā, which for a long while was believed lost, has been retrieved in a neglected South-Indian manuscript.⁷ Though in a regrettably poor state of preservation and abounding in corrupt readings, it bears witness to the same early tradition as does the well-preserved Carakasaṃhitā. Both reflect the teaching of the Ātreya school from which they stem. The Bhelasaṃhitā makes use of the same subdivision of medical learning under eight major headings which forms the structure of Caraka’s compilation.
