An utterance expressing similarity to indistinct words is like: / 'Caṭañcaṭiti upon the hide, ciñcimiti upon the quivering blood, dhagaddhagiti upon the fat, with a cracking sound ṣṭhāgiti upon the bones— / may that fire arising from the saw-like claws of Hari's resonant cage of paws, upon the chest of the demon king, purify you!' / An utterance expressing similarity to an indistinct sentence is like: / '"D-d-dear one, y-y-yourself give me the n-n-nectar of your mouth; g-g-give up q-q-quickly the g-g-golden cup!"— / this stammering speech of the doe-eyed girl, caused by intoxication, was recited in the morning by her companions to provoke laughter.' || 1.32 || / By this, the grammatical correctness of the imitations of those words which are correct and meaningful, of those which are sentences, of that form of speech which is incorrect due to inability, of corrupt dialects (apabhraṃśa), of meaningless phonemes, and of utterances of indistinct phonemes, words, and sentences, is established. / [Objection:] Surely, an imitation is correct when it is of an action of a cultured person such as giving or studying, or of an uncultured but not prohibited action such as laughing or hiccupping; not of a prohibited action. For if someone, imitating one saying 'thus he kills a Brahmin,' were to cut a plantain trunk, he would not, I think, become a fallen sinner. Nor is an imitation an incorrect word (apaśabda), for it would otherwise lead to the absurd consequence that any [imitation] becomes an incorrect word. On the other hand, one who, imitating someone saying 'thus he uses an incorrect word,' uses an incorrect word to designate meanings, does indeed incur the fault of an incorrect word. || 1.33 || / Verbal suffixes denoting abstract action or syntactic roles are primary affixes (kṛt); they are of six kinds: having their own gender (liṅgin), having another gender (anyaliṅgin), having a fixed gender (svaliṅgin), devoid of gender (aliṅgin), depending on grammatical capacity and the like (śaktyādyapekṣin), and depending on subsequent application and the like (anuprayogādyapekṣin). / Among them, those expressing substances, such as aṇ, have their own gender, as in: kumbhakāraḥ ('potter'), paṅkajam ('lotus'), dhātrī ('nurse'), dātram ('sickle'), kāruḥ ('artisan'), kṛkavākuḥ ('rooster'). / Those expressing qualities, such as ṇvul, have another gender [i.e., take the gender of the substantive], as in: kārakaḥ, kārikā, kārakam ('doer'); darśanīyaḥ, darśanīyā, darśanīyam ('handsome/beautiful').
