In the form of an indeclinable: 'near the village'; 'with the student'; 'salutations to the gods'; 'to the south of the village.' / In the form of a particle: 'O Devadatta!'; 'Alas for Devadatta!'; 'without Viṣṇumitra'; 'apart from Yajñadatta.' / In the form of an adposition: 'The lightning flashes near the tree'; 'The warriors are inferior to Arjuna'; 'The Pañcālas are under Brahmadatta'; 'Brahmadatta is over the Pañcālas.' / / Thus the morphological base, affix, and grammatical modification have been shown, / and the own-form of the secondary word has also been described in order. / The indeclinables, particles, and verbal prefixes have been examined, / and the adpositions along with prefixes have been illuminated. / In this system, a base alone is never used, nor are the nominal or verbal terminations, etc., used alone; / grammatical modification occurs here for both, and the secondary word is employed for the sake of the meaning of both. / / Thus ends the first illumination, entitled 'The Illumination of the Base and So Forth,' in the Śṛṅgāraprakāśa composed by the great king of kings, the venerable Bhojadeva.
