With the sense of censure, as: / 'O woman intent on an absurd obsession! How can this hand of yours, / bound with the wedding bracelet, endure that first offence / at the hand of Śambhu with its coiled serpent?' / In the sense of a question, as: / 'Who are you, auspicious one? Whose wife are you, / or what is the purpose of your coming to me? / Tell me, knowing that the mind of self-controlled descendants of Raghu / turns away from another's wife.' / In the sense of narration, as: / 'Surely the lord of sacrifices rises to dispel the nocturnal darkness, / because the quarter of the sky with its lotus face is powdered with pollen from ketaka blossoms.' / 5.19. An adverbial modifier is an attribute of the whole composed of base and affix, through the medium of the portion that is the meaning of the base; for even when an affix is introduced in the sense of abstract action, the whole is sometimes qualified through the affix, as in 'tīvraḥ pākaḥ' (the cooking is intense), [or] 'tīvraṃ pākaḥ' (cooking intensely). It takes the form of a noun, an indeclinable, a primary derivative, a secondary derivative, a compound, or a prefix and so on. Among these, the nominal form is as: / 'As the favorable wind gently, gently urges you, / and this cātaka bird sings sweetly to the left, full of longing, / surely the cranes, accustomed to the season of conception, having formed a line in the sky, / will attend upon you who are delightful to the eye.' / The indeclinable form is as: / 'With the heat of midday subsided, blowing gently, / smoothing the lotuses, taking up drops of spray, / moving within the rows of waves, the breeze / gave support, as it were, to the arms of the playful women.' / The primary derivative form is as: / 'Travellers lying down in the shade of trees along the path are sleeping comfortably; / pious folk sit in the temples of Śiva like seated camels; / my friend, in that deserted bower of the arbour at midday in summer, / a moment is ready to begin for lovers equipped for an assignation with the beloved.' / The secondary derivative form is as: / 'Told a hundred times, dear friend, with very harsh words; / thrown down at [my] feet, shaken off by kicks of my heels a thousand times; /'
