raudraḥ śoka-bhayāśleṣād raudrābhāsa itīritaḥ |
karuṇo hāsya-bhūyiṣṭhaḥ karuṇābhāsa ucyate ||

“the furious sentiment, through the embrace of grief and fear, is declared to be a semblance of the furious;
the pathetic sentiment abounding in the comic is called a semblance of the pathetic.”
