as if motionless, declare immense impending victory.
In the Viṣṇudharmottara, however:
In their rising, setting, and likewise by their movement in this [lane],
planets in the north are to be known as auspicious, and planets in the south as inauspicious.
When planets in Nāgavīthī are bright and radiant,
there is auspiciousness in the world wherever men see them.
Devoid of rays and discoloured when situated in the Vaiśvānara path,
there is no inauspiciousness that they would not cause in the three worlds.
Vṛddhagarga has stated the consequence for each individual lane. As follows:
When planets, at their rising, during absence, or in their transit, enter Nāgavīthī,
then there is excessive rain, abundance of food, and security.
Those entering Gajavīthī also grant security, rain, and abundance of food;
yet merchants are afflicted here, as well as great lineages.
In Airāvatī there is abundance of food, rain, and health;
kings become endowed with enmity, and agitation of armies occurs.
In Govīthī and Ārṣabhavīthī, crops are said to be middling;
powerful men, cattle-owners, cattle, and great kings are afflicted.
In Jaradguvīthī, those distinguished by wealth, knowledge, and age are afflicted;
grain prices increase, and diseases predominantly of phlegm arise.
In Ajavīthī, Brahmins and those who rule over the people are afflicted;
and famine occurs, as well as fear of deficient rainfall.
In Mṛgavīthī, deer-hunters and ascetics are afflicted;
fear of hunger increases, and wind-related disorders occur.
Likewise, in Vaiśvānarī lane, bile and fire arise,
clouds disperse, and stores of grain and the like perish.
In the Varāhasaṃhitā:
This means that the stars of the asterisms indicate the southern, northern, and middle courses.
And likewise Kāśyapa:
Stars situated in the north are proclaimed the northern course, those in the middle the middle,
and in the south the southern course among the asterisms.
In this manner, it is to be understood regarding planets as applicable.
Now, the consequence of the rising and setting of planets in the northern and other courses. There Garga says:
[If a planet] performs its rising and setting while situated in the middle course,

one should predict moderate rain and crops, and well-being. / Resting upon the southern path, [the planet] causes rise and setting; / having gathered grain, one should sow sesamum in the fields. // In the case of portents of the paths of lunar mansions and stars where no specific propitiatory rite is stated, a general propitiatory rite should be performed after determining the gravity or lightness of the portentous effect, preceded by the worship of the planet causing the transit, and involving abundant gifts of gold, food, cows, land, and so forth. Now, the effect of affliction to the lunar mansions of the directions and countries. There, Parāśara says: In this country, the lunar mansions beginning with Kṛttikā belong to the central region; those beginning with Ārdrā, in three sets following the order of the stated groups, belong to the eight directions starting with the east. When the lunar mansions of a direction are afflicted, affliction befalls the people of the countries in that direction. But Garga says: The earth is conceived by the nine groups of lunar mansions, three lunar mansions each, beginning with Kṛttikā, / according to the sequence beginning with the central region, villages, and so forth. // When the central [group], famed as the three lunar mansions beginning with Kṛttikā, / is afflicted, it completely afflicts the central region. // The group beginning with Raudra (Ārdrā), when afflicted, [afflicts] the east; that beginning with Sārpa (Āśleṣā), the south-east; / that beginning with Āryamṇa (Uttaraphalgunī), the south; that beginning with Svāti, the south-west; // that beginning with Jyeṣṭhā, the western quarter; that beginning with Vaiśva (Uttarāṣāḍhā), the north-west; / that beginning with Vāruṇa (Śatabhiṣaj), the north; and that beginning with Pūrva (Pūrvabhādrapadā), the north-east. // In the Viṣṇudharmottara: One should designate Kṛttikā, Rohiṇī, and Saumya (Mṛgaśīrṣa) for the central region; / when that triad is afflicted, the central region is sorely afflicted. // But Ārdrā, Punarvasū, and Puṣya are in the eastern quarter; / when that triad is afflicted, the eastern region is sorely afflicted. // Sārpa (Āśleṣā), Mitra (Anurādhā) [or rather Maghā/Pūrvaphalgunī], and Bhāgya (Pūrvaphalgunī) are remembered in the direction of fire (south-east); / when that triad is afflicted, the south-eastern quarter is afflicted. // Āryamṇa (Uttaraphalgunī), Hasta, and Tvāṣṭra (Citrā) are in the southern direction; / when that triad is afflicted, the southern direction is sorely afflicted. // Svāti, Viśākhā, and Maitra (Anurādhā) are stated in the south-western direction; / when that triad is afflicted, the south-western direction is afflicted. // Jyeṣṭhā, Mūla, and Toya (Pūrvāṣāḍhā) are remembered in the direction of Varuṇa (west);

when that triad is afflicted, the western direction is afflicted. // Vaiśva (Uttarāṣāḍhā), Vaiṣṇava (Śravaṇa), and Vāsava (Dhaniṣṭhā) are assigned to the north-western direction; / [Śatabhiṣaj, Pūrvabhādrapadā, Uttarabhādrapadā to the north, and Revatī, Aśvinī, Bharaṇī to the north-east]; when that triad is afflicted, the north-eastern direction is afflicted. // But Kāśyapa says: On earth, in this Bhāratavarṣa, arranged in nine divisions, / the lunar mansions, beginning with Bahulā (Kṛttikā) in sets of three, reside in the central region and the rest. // When struck by malefic planets, their inhabitants are afflicted; / they will suffer affliction when [the stars are] pierced and crushed by malefics. // In the Viṣṇudharmottara: How does an afflicted lunar mansion bring about affliction to its own region? / Explain all this to me, O best of all upholders of righteousness! // Mārkaṇḍeya said: Saturn and the Sun [afflict] by their transit; the planet Mars by retrograde motion; / Rāhu by eclipse; and Ketu by smoky appearances and risings; // Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury by their helical rising and setting; / the Moon by occultation and improper conjunction. // Likewise, in whichever lunar mansion celestial, terrestrial, and atmospheric / great portents are seen, it afflicts its own direction. // Parāśara, however, says: When the lunar mansions of a direction are afflicted, affliction strikes the people of the countries in that direction; especially the rulers of Śūrasena, Magadha, Kaliṅga, Avanti, the Indus realm, Hārabhūti, Madra, and the Pulindas. But in the Varāhasaṃhitā: Through the groups beginning with Āgneya (Kṛttikā) being afflicted by malefic planets, successively, the kings / of Pañcāla, Magadha, and Kaliṅga go to ruin; // then the rulers of Avanti and Ānarta, and the king of Sindhusauvīra meet death; / and the king of the Hārahauros, the lord of Madra, and another, the ruler of the Kālindas. // When a lunar mansion possesses characteristics opposite to those mentioned and is conjoined with benefic planets, etc., it brings prosperity to the countries of that direction; and having thus named the lunar mansions of the countries in the central, eastern, and other directions in the stated order, it is said in the Mārkaṇḍeyapurāṇa: During afflictions of these, these regions which have been mentioned in order are afflicted; / and they attain prosperity, O brāhmaṇa, when the planets are favorably placed. // Now, the countries of the directions. There, Kāśyapa says: Kuśasthala, Yajantī, Upajyotiṣmatī, Puro[ga],

These reside in the northeastern foot of the Tortoise.
In the Varāhasaṃhitā, however:
"In the northeast are Meruka, Naṣṭarājya, Paśupāla, Kīra, Kāśmīra, / Abhisāra, Darada, Taṅgaṇa, Kulūta, Sairindhra, Vadanarāṣṭra, // Brahmapura, Dīrghaḍāmara, Vanarājya, Kirāta, Cīna, Kaulinda, / Pahlava, Lola, Jaṭādhara, Kulaṭa, the Khaśaghoṣas, and those named Kuśika; // the Ekapādas, Andhras, Viśvas, Suvarṇabhū, Vasudhana, Diviṣṭhas, / Pauravas, Cīravivasanas, Asinetras, Muñjādrir, and the Gāndharvas."
Here the principal countries, in the Vaṭakaṇikā:
"In the [triad] beginning with Revatī are Kāśmīra, Arṇava, Darada, Abhisāra, Cīna, Khaśa, / Taṅgaṇa, Kīra, Kulūta, Brahmapura, and the Jaṭāsuras."
When a zodiacal sign or its lord is afflicted, there is affliction also to the regions belonging to that sign.
And likewise in the Mārkaṇḍeyapurāṇa:
"The regions of the Tortoise, and likewise the lunar mansions in these regions, O twice-born, / and the zodiacal signs in the lunar mansions, are situated within the planetary signs. // Therefore, from afflictions to the planets and lunar mansions, one should indicate affliction to the region. / For the planet that is lord of whatever lunar mansion, from its harm comes danger // to that region, O best of sages; and likewise from its elevation, when good comes.
Among these, beginning with Aries, two, [Aries and Taurus,] are in the center, and Gemini and the next in the mouth; // Cancer and Leo are positioned in the southeastern foot;
Leo, Virgo, and Libra are considered the triad of signs in the right flank; // and both Libra and Scorpio are in the southwestern foot;
Scorpio together with Sagittarius is positioned upon the back; // and in its northwestern foot is the triad beginning with Sagittarius and Capricorn;
Aquarius and Pisces likewise reside in its northern flank; // Pisces and Aries, O best of the twice-born, stand in the northeastern foot.
Therefore, having understood the affliction to the region, lunar mansion, and planet, and likewise to oneself, // an intelligent man should perform a propitiatory rite, and [heed] the popular beliefs, O best of men.
