antarmukhāḥ paurabhayaṃ vihaṅgāḥ pra(prā)kārasaṃsthā vinivedayanti/
āgantunāśāya bahirmukhās te tulyaṃ vihaṅgaiḥ saramātmajau(jā)ś ca//
Facing inward, birds perched upon the ramparts announce danger for the city-dwellers; / facing outward, they announce the destruction of the invader; and dogs, together with the birds, behave similarly.
