67. The three seasons are a common trope in Indian Buddhist literature; cf. AKBh(P), 177,19–21 on AK III 88c–89d (= tr. Pruden 1988–90, vol. 2, 475). Yaśomitra, the commentator of the AKBh, makes an interesting remark about this in his commentary, Sphuṭārthā Abhidharmakośavyākhyā : pravacane traya eva rtavo na yathā loke ṣaḍ iti. śiśiro hi śītasāmānyād dhemanta ity uktaḥ. vasanto ’py uṣṇasāmānyād grīṣma ity uktaḥ. śarad api vṛṣṭisāmānyād [Tib. 320.b] varṣā ity ukteti, “In Scripture, only three seasons [are mentioned], not six as there are in the world.”
