All honor the saddharma as supreme: / This is the natural law of the fully awakened Buddhas. / Therefore, whoever here delights in virtue / And wishes to realize greatness of self / Should remember the Buddha's teaching / And revere the saddharma. / Any fool who has not developed / Faith in the Buddha's teaching / Will go to ruin, / Like merchants captured by rākṣasīs. / Any wise person who has developed / Faith in the Buddha's teaching / Will happily cross to the other shore, / Like merchants [borne] by Valāhaka. / Peerless and unequaled Tathāgatas, / Buddhas who dwell in the dual contemplation / Of the ease [of concentration] and complete seclusion, / Having dispelled the darkness, gone to the other shore, and attained renown, / Have attained what was to be attained and mastered their minds. / Totally liberated, with āsravas exhausted, utterly freed, / With liberated minds, untainted, free of āsravas, / They gaze [down] for the benefit of embodied beings in the worlds. / Just as someone standing on the summit of a mountain / Surveys all beings below, / So too do those of excellent intelligence, free from grief, / Ascend the palace made of the Dharma / And gaze upon the multitude / Oppressed by birth and aging, and tormented by grief. / Since they open the door to the deathless, / Let those who wish to hear dispel their doubt! / The Chapter on the Tathāgata, the twenty-first.
To listen well, to conduct oneself well, / To go forth properly from the household, / To be fully surrounded by renouncers, / And to live in harmony as a śramaṇa are good. / Foolish and ignorant people / Behave as though they were deathless; / The wise act toward the saddharma / Like an invalid during the night. / Just as when one enters a well-roofed house / That is shrouded in darkness, / Though shapes and forms exist, / Even one with eyes cannot see them; / So too in this world, even a man born of noble lineage, / Though endowed with intelligence, / Will not understand unwholesome / And wholesome dhammas until he has heard [the teachings].
