Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva further wished to expound: "A bodhisattva has four matters for benefiting sentient beings without weariness of mind. What are the four? First, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva relinquishes his own joy and gives it to sentient beings, seeing others suffer pain as no different from himself, his compassionate mind aching with distress piercing to the marrow; second, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva establishes a great bridge and ferry where beings are drowning, conveying sentient beings across without weariness; third, amid the ocean of birth and death where sentient beings whirl in whirlpools, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva grasps them firmly with his own hands to make them reach the other shore; fourth, knowing that all sentient beings, past, present, and future, are like illusions and transformations, though he realizes this principle, he crosses people over untiringly. Such are the four matters by which a bodhisattva benefits and rescues the multitude of beings."
