Bhadrapāla Bodhisattva [said]: "I wish to expound upon the eight matters of a bodhisattva's wondrous practice. What are the eight? First, the bodhisattva dwells in the world of five defilements, rescuing sentient beings without giving rise to weariness; second, seeing sentient beings initiate meritorious deeds, assisting and protecting them without giving rise to an impure mind; third, seeing people commit evil, admonishing and rebuking them earnestly to cause them to abandon it; fourth, toward those in difficulty and calamity, rescuing them with pity, like a mother loving her child; fifth, toward those who come begging, not begrudging bodily life; sixth, in places of distress and calamity, supporting and taking them by the hand to cause them to escape difficulty; seventh, seeing people with wrong views, pitying and admonishing them earnestly to cause them to attain right view; eighth, nurturing sentient beings like newborn infants, giving away all merits to them, and dedicating them together toward unexcelled awakening. Such are the eight matters by which a bodhisattva benefits immeasurable sentient beings."
