Prāptamahāsthāma Bodhisattva further wished to expound: "Whoever can perform the Buddha's work within the bequeathed Dharma of Śākyamuni Buddha, the eight of us will constantly protect. Broadly expounded, there are four matters. What are the four? First, recalling immeasurable suffering and seeing the suffering of sentient beings as no different from one's own; second, relinquishing all the merit of the precepts we uphold and giving it to sentient beings, dedicating it together toward unexcelled awakening; third, being able to endure painful matters, bearing all sentient beings to the other shore; fourth, inspiring the minds of all sentient beings, just as a loving father thinks of his child without difference. Such are the pure, wondrous practices of a bodhisattva for benefiting oneself and benefiting others."
