The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara also delights to speak of the four means of embracing practiced by bodhisattvas. What are the four? First, the bodhisattva practices the six pāramitās while also transforming people and rescuing all; second, giving rise to loving-kindness and compassion to nurture all living beings; third, benefiting oneself and benefiting others, aiding both oneself and them; fourth, having pity in mind for those who are sick and suffering, as if looking upon newborn infants. These are the bodhisattva’s four means of embracing to gather in sentient beings, by which the bodhisattva widely benefits sentient beings and embraces the wondrous, wholesome merits of a pure land.
