When assembling [by striking] the gaṇḍī, one must first begin lightly: thirty heavy strikes, next twenty strikes, next ten strikes, and five very light strikes. This is done three times, and then three heavy strikes. When assembling śramaṇas, then forty heavy strikes, next thirty strikes, next twenty strikes, next ten strikes, and five very light strikes; three rounds as above, followed by three heavy strikes. When it is for poṣadha, first seven very light strikes, fifty heavy strikes, next forty, next thirty, next twenty, and next ten very light strikes; also three rounds, with three heavy strikes. At the saṅgha's meal, first four heavy strikes, twenty slow, straight strikes, next ten strikes, also ten very light strikes, next five strikes, and then two rounds. The preceding numbers vary according to the time, aiming for three rounds, and one must observe the circumstances. In emergencies there is no fixed count: first rapid and then slow, or sometimes first slow and then rapid. This is the chief vihārapāla's method of striking the gaṇḍī.
