Third, not understanding the light and not understanding the grave. Not understanding the light: as when a śrāmaṇera who has received the precepts commits a single offense against the precept of sexual misconduct, feels deep shame, would rather die than commit it again, changes his status for the rest of his life, and does not accept personal invitations, sorrowfully imploring among the assembly: “May you permit me to remain a bhikṣu, exhorting and converting others to create merit for the rest of my life.” For such persons, although they do not attain the seeds of the path in the present life, the retribution for their offense in future lives will be light—this is called not understanding the light. Not understanding the grave: as with the bhikṣu who plucked tree leaves, who fell among dragons during the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, and to this day his retribution has not ended. Not knowing that breaking a light precept brings grave retribution is called not understanding the grave.
