Fourth, not understanding sāvaśeṣa and anavaśeṣa offenses. For instance, stealing five coins from a person and later returning them to the owner, or killing a caṇḍāla and the like—this is not knowing that there is sāvaśeṣa within anavaśeṣa offenses; this is called not understanding sāvaśeṣa. Not understanding anavaśeṣa: as in the thirty matters, demanding fine robes out of close affection, and when the owner of the robes demands them back, if one does not return them, [goods worth] five coins or more constitute a pārājika. Not knowing whether such things among bhikṣus are sāvaśeṣa or anavaśeṣa is called not understanding anavaśeṣa.
