A newly arrived bhikṣu has ten virtues [to observe]: First, after paying homage to the Buddha, he should stand back and inquire about the family name and personal name of the karmadāna, how many members there are in the bhikṣusaṅgha, and the name of the daily duty officer. Second, he should pay homage to the sthaviras and greet the junior monks. Third, he must not ask about the accommodations [for lodging]. Fourth, when given a bed, mat, or bedding, he must not complain whether they are good or bad. Fifth, he should seek a niśrayācārya. Sixth, he should also make offerings. Seventh, he must not criticize the scriptures. Eighth, he must not enter or leave at will. Ninth, if he wishes to sweep the top of the stūpa, he should report to the vihārapāla. Tenth, when wishing to depart, if he has bedding, he should entrust it to the host.
