2.56

佛告喜王：「挽火車者，今我身是。因發菩提心故，疾得成佛。是故當知，一切眾生發菩提心，其事非一：或因慈心，或因恚心；或因施心，或因慳心；或因歡喜，或因煩惱；或因恩愛別離，或因怨憎和合；或因親近善知識，或因惡友；或因見佛，或因聞法。是故當知，一切眾生發菩提心，各各不同。喜王！當知菩薩摩訶薩知恩報恩，其事如是。」

The Buddha told Prītirāja: "The one who pulled the fire cart was none other than myself today. Because of generating the bodhimind, I quickly attained buddhahood. Therefore, you should know that when all sentient beings generate the bodhimind, the circumstances are not just one: some are moved by loving-kindness, some by anger; some by a generous mind, some by a stingy mind; some by joy, some by affliction; some by separation from loved ones, some by association with the hated; some by associating with good spiritual friends, some by bad companions; some by seeing the Buddha, some by hearing the Dharma. Therefore, you should know that all sentient beings' generation of the bodhimind differs from one to another. Prītirāja! You should know that a bodhisattva-mahāsattva's knowing of kindness and repaying of kindness are like this."
