"At that time, Prince Kalyāṇamitra accepted the dragon king's invitation. After seven days had passed, he obtained the wish-fulfilling maṇi pearl and returned to Jambudvīpa. The dragon king of the great ocean sent various dragon spirits to fly through the air to escort him, arriving at this shore. Seeing his younger brother Pāpamitra, he asked him: 'Where are your followers and companions now?' He replied: 'Kalyāṇamitra! The ships sank and all have died to the last man; I, your younger brother, am all alone. Clinging to a dead corpse, I managed to save my life. All of the wealth has perished.' Kalyāṇamitra replied: 'In all under heaven, there is no great treasure that surpasses one's own body.' The younger brother said: 'That is not so. People wish to die rich rather than live poor. How do I know this to be so? I once went to a cemetery and heard the ghosts of the dead argue in this way.' Prince Kalyāṇamitra was by nature upright and honest, so he spoke the truth to his younger brother: 'Although you have lost your treasures, it does not matter. I have now obtained the wish-fulfilling maṇi pearl from the dragon king.' The younger brother said: 'Where is it now?' Kalyāṇamitra replied: 'It is now in my topknot.' When the younger brother heard these words, jealousy arose in his heart, and in anguish and frustration, he thought to himself: 'Our parents have always favored him with love, and now he has obtained the wish-fulfilling maṇi pearl as well. As for myself, my parents despise me more than broken tiles and gravel.' Having thought this, he said to Kalyāṇamitra: 'Splendid! How very good that you have obtained this treasure pearl! Now along this perilous road, we must guard it with extra care.'
