"When bodhisattva-mahāsattvas abide in the stage of nature practice, they cultivate the karmic causes for the thirty-two marks. When abiding in the stage of pure practice, although they possess these thirty-two marks, the marks are not complete and have not yet attained bright purity. When abiding in the twelve practices, only then are they fully distinct, obvious, and complete with all Buddha-dharmas. Although the marks are immeasurable, because sentient beings differ—being superior, middling, or inferior—and [the marks] are inconceivable, therefore the Buddha spoke of thirty-two marks. All the merit of all sentient beings, joined and gathered together, equals exactly one hair mark of the Tathāgata. All the merit of all the hair pores, joined and gathered together, then forms one secondary sign. Gathering together the merit of all the secondary signs, multiplied a hundredfold, then forms one mark—excepting only the white curl of hair and the mark of the invisible crown of the head. Gathering together all the rest of the marks, multiplied a thousandfold, forms these two marks. Joining and gathering together all the merit of the thirty-two marks and eighty secondary signs, multiplied tens of millions of billions of times, then forms the Tathāgata's deep, far-reaching voice like thunder—its sound is heard throughout immeasurable, boundless, inconceivably numerous Buddha-worlds like fine dust motes.
