The intention of Asaṅga's treatise is: the above three distinctions are concluded; this is the fourth ādhāra, "the ādhāra of desiring to obtain the dharmakāya." Among the six kinds of ādhāra, the third, "the ādhāra of desire," has two; the above was desiring to obtain the dharmakāya. Within it there are two: first, desiring to obtain the verbal dharmakāya; second, desiring to obtain the realized dharmakāya. The verbal dharmakāya refers to the teaching that can express; the realized dharmakāya refers to the principle that is expressed. The meaning here is: above, in practicing to seek the realization of the rūpakāya, the Buddha stated that possessing signs is illusory and false, while the dharmakāya is real; based on this, one then seeks the signless dharmakāya. Intending to realize its signlessness, one first initiates the four practices of close association: approaching good spiritual friends, seeking to hear from them, contemplating, and cultivating; therefore one first desires to obtain the verbal dharmakāya.
