'Great' has five meanings: first, great in renown, being known by the great assembly and great men; second, great in station, all abiding in noble fruition and not in ordinary worldly status; third, great in merit, having exhausted all defilements and realized knowledge and eradication; fourth, great in practice, seeking great bodhi and cultivating extensive deeds; fifth, great in retinue, numbering twelve hundred and fifty. Nāgārjuna explains: where there are seven treasures, gold is the greatest; even in a place without fine objects, an iron hoe is the greatest; just as when the Three Jewels exist, the Buddha is the greatest, even so in the final period, a precept-breaking monk is the greatest. Therefore the sūtra states: 'Although the campaka flower is withered, it still surpasses other flowers in their fresh bloom; monks who break the precepts and act evilly still surpass non-Buddhists who keep their precepts.' Here, 'great' is spoken provisionally in contrast to those in training.
