On "bodhi" and so forth: second, specifically explaining bodhisattva. The phonetic transliteration "bodhisattva" is still incomplete; in full it is bodhisattva, which here is translated as "awakened sentient being." Because the people of the time did not value the Tang language, the Sanskrit term was preserved; the Qin region preferred brevity, so it also dropped the two characters dhi and ttva, simply saying bodhisattva. In terms of the sphere: that which is sought is awakening (bodhi); those who are saved are sentient beings (sattva). Yet in terms of persons, there are four propositions: the two vehicles seek but do not save; the Buddhas save but do not seek; bodhisattvas both seek and save; ordinary beings neither seek nor save. In terms of mind, there are also four propositions: the Buddhas have awakening without [deluded] sentiment; ordinary beings have sentiment without awakening; bodhisattvas have both sentiment and awakening; the two vehicles, entering the realm without remainder, have neither sentiment nor awakening. In terms of subject and object: that which is sought is awakening; that which can seek is the sentient being.
