夫菩提心者。謂上求下化二利不息。既若見苦為苦，即不能忘身捨命出生入死，是故便捨大菩提心。如舍利弗本發大心行菩薩行，至六住，被乞眼睛便生瞋忿，不成忍行捨大歸小，蓋由我相也。

Now, as for the bodhicitta: It means seeking above and transforming below, the two benefits continuing without cease. If one perceives suffering as suffering, one cannot forget the body, sacrifice one's life, and go through birth and death; therefore one will abandon the great bodhicitta. For example, Śāriputra originally generated the great mind and practiced the bodhisattva path; but when he reached the sixth abhimukhi and someone begged for his eye, he gave rise to rage and resentment, failed to accomplish the practice of forbearance, and abandoned the Mahāyāna to return to the Hīnayāna—all because of the characteristic of a self.
