"Free from superior upon superior": for instance, the first ground compared to the stages before the grounds is called superior, but it has not left behind what is superior to it on the second ground; up to equal enlightenment, it still does not escape what is superior to it at sublime enlightenment. Only the Buddha's ultimate realization has no superior above the superior stage; hence it is said to be "free from superior upon superior." Thus, ordinary beings are free from inferior upon inferior, the Buddhas are free from superior upon superior, and the rest in between do not leave behind the superior and inferior.
