"Please examine the various inverted consciousnesses": this explains "the various minds" in the sūtra. The Wei translation states: 'The Tathāgata explains that the abiding of various minds is all the non-abiding of mind, which is named the abiding of mind.' The treatise explains the meaning: 'various' means multiple kinds; 'abiding' refers to inversion, because all eight consciousnesses can take objects as conditions and have grasping attachment; alternatively, in terms of the first six [consciousnesses] they are called multiple kinds, continuously taking coarse and manifest objects as conditions, hence named 'abiding.'
