As for "three wisdoms," next it praises wisdom, meaning [wisdom from] hearing, contemplation, and cultivation. The first is the stage of dry wisdom; the next is the four wholesome roots; and from the patience of suffering upward it is named the wisdom of cultivation. "Sixteen truths": next it praises the contemplations, as explained before, and so forth. "Four truths": next it praises the gateways of the truths, also as explained before, and so forth. "Contemplation of the four, three, two, and one grades": next it praises the four gateways, namely the four patiences of contemplation. Adducing them from the bottom: heat is fourth, summit is third, patience is second, and highest mundane dharma is first. Four refers to the four wholesome roots; three eliminates the rank of heat; two eliminates heat and summit; and one eliminates the prior three. Moreover, four refers to the four fruits; three refers to the three fruits; two refers to the two fruits; and one refers to the first fruit. This is not the intended praise; now we take the former explanation.
