"Attaining ninety patiences": the fourth is the conclusion. The text has two parts: first, an individual conclusion; next, a general conclusion. Now, the first. Some say: for the thirty minds of the three ranks of worthies prior to the stages, within each they practice three grades of contemplation—lower, middle, and upper, or entering, dwelling, and emerging—combining into ninety patiences. Some say: four, three, two, and one combine into ten patiences; in relation to the nine grounds of the three realms, within each ground there are nine grades, completing ninety patiences. Further, it is said: the contemplations of truth are twenty, meaning the sixteen truths and the four truths; the contemplations of grades are ten, meaning four, three, two, and one; altogether forming thirty, each having the three grades of lower, middle, and upper, completing ninety patiences. Now we state: the ninety patiences are an individual conclusion. The virtues in the sūtra text cannot be explained with diverse disparate theories; it merely speaks of being fully endowed with the twenty-two items down to four, three, two, and one; their count amounts to eighty-one grades, and from these dharmas arise the four dhyānas, the four formless absorptions, and the absorption of cessation, combining into ninety patiences. Although the sūtra has no explicit text for the four dhyānas and so on, it can be deduced through meaning, and so forth. "All merits are fulfilled": next is the general conclusion.
