Question: The earlier listing of the śrāvakas also spoke of truths and conditions, now the praise of the pratyekabuddhas reiterates and clarifies them again, and the subsequent listing of the bodhisattvas still calls them arhats; why is this? Answer: Their realizations naturally differ upon the one object, just as three beasts cross a river or three birds leave a net—the river is the same but the beasts are different; the net is one but the birds are distinct. Therefore the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: "Contemplating with lower wisdom brings the bodhi of a śrāvaka; contemplating with medium wisdom brings the bodhi of a pratyekabuddha; contemplating with higher wisdom brings the bodhi of a bodhisattva; contemplating with supreme wisdom brings the bodhi of all buddhas." It is precisely because the principle is one while views differ that truths and conditions are spoken of in reciprocal terms, and so forth.
