"Fear" refers to the five fears: first, fear concerning livelihood, which arises from distinguishing a self and cherishing the requisites of life; second, fear of ill repute, which arises from expectation when acting without benefit [to others]; third, fear of death, which arises from having self-view and losing one's cherished thoughts; fourth, fear of miserable destinies, which arises from bad karma through not encountering the buddhas; fifth, fear of audiences, which arises from seeing that one's own realization is inferior while others are superior.
