First, explaining the names: first general, then specific. Concerning the phrase "three bodies": "three" indicates the number; "body" has three meanings, namely essence, support, and collection; hence fascicle ten of the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says that the meanings of essence, support, and collection are collectively spoken of as "body", and the seventh fascicle of the Buddhabhūmi also agrees with that explanation; this is the numeral-appositional compound (digu-samāsa) among the six types of compounds. As for the specific names: first, the essential nature dharma body (svābhāvika-dharmakāya), meaning suchness itself; its essence is eternally unchanging, hence it is called the essential nature body; because it is the support on which all qualities and dharmas such as the powers and fearlessnesses rely, it is also called the dharma body. Next, the enjoyment body (saṃbhogakāya): because it can cause oneself and others to enjoy the various pleasures of the great Dharma, it is called the enjoyment body. Finally, the transformation body (nirmāṇakāya): meaning that for the benefit of sentient beings it manifests various transformational activities, hence it is called the transformation body.
