"Mahāmaudgalyāyana" is also a foreign family name, untranslated here. His courtesy name was Kolita, which is the name of a tree deity. His mother had no sons and constantly sacrificed to the tree deity to beg for a child. Later, when she obtained a child, not understanding karmic actions, she thought it was a bestowal of the tree deity, and based on this gave him the name, calling him simply Kolita. After encountering the Tathāgata, he attained the fruit of an arhat; he was foremost in supernatural powers. Furthermore, he was on terms of heartfelt intimacy with Śāriputra, and they made a mutual pact that whoever attained the path first would inform the other. As for "Mahākātyāyana": "mahā" means great, and "Kātyāyana" is the family name. Having attained arhatship, he was foremost in doctrinal debate.
