Now, within this parable itself there are two stages: first, "At that time the elder saw that his sons had got out in safety," which first clarifies severing delusions, emerging outside the three realms, and ascending to the fruition of the non-learner; second, the passage from "all [sat] at a crossroad" onward, which directly clarifies the arousal of the capacity for the Great Vehicle. "A crossroad" means completely unobstructed from east to west and openly traversable from south to north; this clarifies that the four sides are unobstructed. "Open ground" clarifies that above there is also no obstruction. Being unobstructed in these five places outwardly indicates that when the capacity for the Great Vehicle is aroused, the five turbidities cannot act as obstructions. Below it then explains, saying "unobstructed"; this explains the absence of obstruction on the four sides. It also says "unhindered"; this explains the absence of hindrance above.
