The questioner says: "If the knowledge of exhaustion and [the knowledge of] non-arising constitute the substance of the carts, then when the state of an arhat is attained, the master of doctrine always says that at that time one has already realized the knowledge of non-arising. However, an arhat's retribution body is a dharma within the three realms. If so, then it is within the three realms that these two knowledges are realized; hence, these two knowledges are dharmas within the three realms. Why then say that the three carts are outside the gate?" The interpreter says: "The time of realizing the two knowledges is indeed as the questioner states, yet one cannot call these two knowledges dharmas within the three realms. How is this known to be so? When these two knowledges arise, they necessarily arise conditioning an object: conditioning the exhaustion of the causes of the three realms, this is exiting outside the three realms; the mind illuminating the demise of the effects of the three realms is also the sense of exiting outside the three realms. Therefore, because the conditioned objective realm has a distinct meaning, we know that they are not dharmas within the three realms."
