10.56

若除其病，如上所說，若不除法，用之則異。云何用異？有相則具用四門；無相則用共不共八門。褒貶則用貶小褒大，貶偏褒圓，貶權褒實。同歸則用同歸一乘，常住佛性，究竟圓趣。常住則用非常、非無常，雙用常無常，二鳥俱遊，八術具足。用五味則次第如文，在下當說。用提謂波利，亦不止是人天之乘。用半滿則有五句：滿、開滿立半、破半明滿、帶半明滿、廢半明滿。用因緣、假名，則為三藏兩門耳。用誑相，是通教一門耳。用真秖是常，常秖是真。法界不獨在《華嚴》；圓宗不偏指《大集》。用有相無相者，約有相明無相，約無相明有相，二不相離。用一音者，有慧方便解，有方便慧解。設取其名，用義永異（云云）。

If their errors are eliminated as explained above, without discarding the dharmas [themselves], the application of them is different. How is the application different? For characteristics, all four gates are fully used; for the signless, the eight gates of the shared and unshared are used. For disparaging and praising, one uses disparaging the small and praising the great, disparaging the biased and praising the perfect, and disparaging the provisional and praising the real. For universal convergence, one uses converging into the One Vehicle, the eternal abiding of buddha-nature, and ultimate perfect orientation. For eternal abiding, one uses neither eternal nor impermanent, and the dual application of eternal and impermanent, the two birds flying together, with the eight arts complete. In using the five flavors, the sequence is according to the texts, as will be explained below. In using Trapuṣa and Bhallika, it is also not merely the vehicle of humans and devas. In using the half-word and full-word, there are five propositions: the full; opening the full to establish the half; breaking the half to reveal the full; carrying the half to reveal the full; and abolishing the half to reveal the full. In using causes and conditions and nominal designation, these are merely two gates of the Tripiṭaka. In using deceptive characteristics, this is merely one gate of the shared teaching. In using the true, it is just the eternal; the eternal is just the true. The dharma realm does not reside exclusively in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra; the perfect lineage is not pointed to solely by the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra. In using characteristics and the signless, one clarifies the signless with reference to characteristics, and clarifies characteristics with reference to the signless—the two are inseparable. In using the single voice, there is the understanding of skillful means through wisdom, and the understanding of wisdom through skillful means. Even if their names are adopted, the meanings applied are forever different, and so forth.
