'At that time the elder fell ill, and knowing of himself that he would not live long, he said to the impoverished son: "I now possess much gold, silver, and precious treasures, and my storehouses are overflowing. You should know how much there is among them, and what should be taken and given." The impoverished son received the command and took charge of and knew the various goods, yet had no intention of aspiring to take even a single meal; and his dwelling place remained where it was before.' What meaning does this express? Following the Vaipulya, *Prajñā* was expounded next. The contemplative wisdom of *Prajñā* is the family business; going through name-and-form up to the knowledge of all forms is the various goods. Subhūti and others turning and transmitting the teaching is taking charge and knowing. Merely preaching it for the bodhisattvas without practicing and realizing it themselves, they had no intention of grasping it—this is the *Mahā-prajñā* emerging from the Vaipulya sūtras. Because of this, they came to recognize the Dharma gates of the great beings and destroy ignorance—just as from raw butter, cooked butter is produced. This is the teaching of the fourth period.
