'Furthermore, after this had passed, their minds came to mutual trust, and he came and went without difficulty; yet his dwelling place remained where it was before.' What meaning does this express? It clarifies that after the Tripiṭaka, the Vaipulya was expounded next. Having already attained the fruits of the path, their minds came to mutual trust. Hearing the great is called 'entering'; abiding in the small is called 'exiting'; and the bitter words of rebuke are called 'without difficulty.' Moreover, stepping into the mansion is called 'entering': entering to see the ministers, the eminent clans, and the power of great merit, hearing the Jeweled Torch Dhāraṇī, and seeing the inconceivable transformations of liberation—hence it is called 'entering.' Exiting means staying overnight in a thatched hut: the realm of the two vehicles is called 'exiting.' Their minds coming to mutual trust means: having already attained arhatship, hearing scolding without anger, feeling shame within, and not daring to transform others with the teachings of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. His mind gradually became mellow and ripe—just as from curd, raw butter is produced. This is named the Vaipulya sūtras emerging from the sūtras, which is the teaching of the third period.
