When this sūtra clarifies peaceful and joyful practice, peace and joy designates nirvāṇa, which is the perfect fruit; practice is the perfect cause, and being identical in meaning to nirvāṇa, it is called the Tathāgata's practice. Entering the room, donning the robe, and sitting on the seat are all described in terms of the Tathāgata, which is spoken in reference to the person; nirvāṇa is spoken in reference to the dharma. Discussing the dharma in terms of the person, the Tathāgata is nirvāṇa; discussing the person in terms of the dharma, nirvāṇa is the Tathāgata. The meaning of the two sūtras is identical. The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] lists the name of the one practice and extensively explains the sequential five practices; the Lotus [Sūtra] sets forth peaceful and joyful practice and extensively explains the perfect meaning.
