Furthermore, there is abolishing wisdom and cultivating wisdom anew; not abolishing wisdom and cultivating wisdom anew; abolishing wisdom and not cultivating wisdom; and not abolishing wisdom and not cultivating wisdom. What is abolishing wisdom and cultivating wisdom anew? A bodhisattva of the tripiṭaka [teaching] abolishes his own wisdom and cultivates non-arising wisdom anew. What is not abolishing wisdom and cultivating wisdom anew? A śrāvaka abiding in the fruit does not abolish his own wisdom, but subsequently wanders in contemplation to learn non-arising wisdom, without actually using skillful wisdom to sever the fetters; also those who practice along the sequence are such. What is not abolishing wisdom and not cultivating wisdom? This is also a śrāvaka abiding in the fruit who conceives the idea of extinction and is unwilling to cultivate the great [vehicle]. It is as the four disciples expressed in their understanding: "In the past, our bodies were weary and exhausted, and we merely contemplated emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness; toward the bodhisattva dharmas, we had no mind of desire or delight whatsoever"; and it is also those who further accommodate future conditions. What is abolishing wisdom and not cultivating wisdom? Bodhisattvas who have abolished the tripiṭaka wisdom and fallen back into various evils are such; it is also those who, having abolished wisdom, covertly enter the sudden and do not cultivate expedient wisdom.
